A car-based tour featuring the Swiss-Italian precinct north of Daylesford, the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park and some examples of more recent dry stone walls.
Our 2019 Spring Field Trip returns to an area of central Victoria visited by the Association in 2006. We’ll see traditional dry stone walls and structures in the Swiss-Italian area of Shepherds Flat and Yandoit, visit remnants of the gold mining era near Castlemaine and inspect some recent dry stone walls constructed by a local waller using both basalt and slate.
The tour includes lunch at the historic Guildford Hotel where we’ll learn about the area’s past from a local historian. We’ll visit some of the historic features of the Castlemaine diggings, and conclude with a visit to historic sites north of Chewton.
The tour will commence at 10.30am in Daylesford (location to be advised) and conclude about 5.30pm near Castlemaine. For those who want to stay on, dinner will be arranged at a local venue.
Cost: Members $55.00 Non-members $60.00
The cost includes lunch (drinks at own cost) and a packed afternoon tea. Dinner and drinks after the tour are at own cost.
And tell us below us if you will stay on for dinner afterwards:
Further information including the meeting point in Daylesford, what to bring, what to wear, safety procedures and other arrangements will be sent to all registrants two weeks prior to the weekend.
