A weekend self-drive tour of some of the notable dry stone walls in the eastern Mount Lofty Ranges and the mid-north of SA. You will see many walls built 150 years ago and still in good condition, walls recently restored at DSWAA workshops, and some new walls built by present-day craftsmen.
Day 1: Clare Valley, particularly Farrell Flat and Mintaro
Day 2: Adel Hills, particularly eastern Mt Lofty Ranges from Mt Pleasant to Keyneton
Note that Days 1 and 2 have been reversed on account of a car rally with road closures in the EMLR on the Saturday.
For details contact Bruce Munday: bruce.m42@bigpond.com 0417 895 249

Alistair Tune will conduct two dry stone wall-building workshops at the Camperdown Showgrounds on Saturdays 31st October and 14th November from 9am to 4pm.
The course cost is $430.00 per day and includes lunch and handouts. It is promoted as a skill for life and all participants will walk away with the skills to build their own dry stone wall.
DSWAA Members who came to the Annual General Meeting in August had the opportunity to see Alistair and fellow-waller David Long, with an assortment of community assistants, as they commenced this new wall at the Showgrounds. It was a most satisfying dry stone wall community event.
For further information and registration form contact Louise Duffy on E: duffylouise@bigpond,com or T: 0467 175 672.

Land owners who have dry stone walls on their properties are encouraged to attend a demonstration of wall repair on Saturday 18 June.
A ‘gapping workshop’ will be conducted by the Dry Stone Walls Association of Australia, and will be held
2 – 4pm, Saturday 18 June 2016
Pomborneit North Hall
(adjacent to the PomboMart at Pomborneit, Princes Highway between Colac and Camperdown).
Experienced local waller, Alistair Tune, will run the gapping workshop. It is free and anyone can come to participate or just watch.
Alistair will provide hands-on advice to wall owners, and people who like to help them, to gain the basic skills to maintain and repair the gaps in their dry stone walls.
Leaflets will be available for those attending, containing tips on looking after dry stone walls.
President of the DSWAA, Jim Holdsworth, said ‘Dry stone walls are strong and durable but, like any man-made structure, occasional maintenance is critical to their longevity. Our aims are to encourage and help wall owners to look after their dry stone walls.’
‘The Stoney Rises are unique in Australia for the number of dry stone walls and the story they tell about the volcanic geology of Western Victoria. The walls give the landscape a special quality that must be preserved’.
Dry stone walls fall into disrepair for various reasons. Stock, trees, kangaroos, ground movement and vandalism are just a few causes. If a wall remains unrepaired, it continues to deteriorate, potentially allowing stock to escape and a loss in the aesthetic and heritage value. Poorly maintained walls can also decrease the value of the land asset.
The Dry Stone Walls Association is keen to support wall owners to recognize the first signs of wall deterioration and develop the skills to carry out maintenance on their walls.
Background
The skill of dry stone walling came to Australia in the mid 1800s, mostly from Great Britain. The first settlers on the land recognised the opportunity to use the stone that lay freely on the land across the landscape of south-west Victoria. Many thousands of kilometres of walls were built to define boundaries and contain stock. Most of the walls that were built from that period through to the mid 1900s stand as a fine testament to the skills of the original wallers.
Many of the very early dry stone walls in Great Britain are in good condition today because wall owners allocate time to inspect and repair their walls during autumn-winter when normal farming activity is lower. This maintains the functional effectiveness of walls and ensures their retention as a valuable part of the community heritage of the area.

Well known local landscaper Wayne Fox is holding a one-day workshop to teach the ancient art of building a drystone wall similar to those found in the UK and Ireland. Wayne is an experienced instructor who teaches in Australia and recently at a drystone wall festival in Donegal, Ireland where he was a guest instructor.
The weekend is supported by the Drystone Wall Association of Australia and Wayne has invited other drystone wall experts to teach so that each student gets plenty of individual attention. Students will get a set of class notes and after a brief introduction it will be hands on for the rest of the day.
The Workshop costs $110 with morning and afternoon tea, lunch and knock-off drinks. It also includes membership of the Dry Stone Walls Association of Australia.
Participants should bring work or gardening gloves, a hat, covered shoes and a water bottle.
The workshop will be held at the historic property “Eunonyhareenyha”, 7km from the CBD

We start the tour at 10am at the Kyneton Museum, 67 Piper Street, Kyneton with a brief on the district’s history then a walk and drive tour led by architectural historian, Allan Willingham to see some marvellous dry stone walls and stone houses in Kyneton followed by a visit to the iconic bluestone Rock House built in the 1850s on the banks of the Campaspe River.
This will be followed by a ‘farmer’s lunch’ at historic Tanderrum Farm, mixing with workshop participants.
At 2pm we will tour Tanderrum’s extensive and diverse dry stone walls and wells, led by historians Andrew Kilsby and Susan Walter (Malmsbury Historical Society).
At 3.30pm we will visit the Fidler’s modern rubble stone house on the outskirts of Kyneton and have drinks at 5pm and an opportunity to enjoy reflections on the day.
