DESCRIPTION:Land owners who have dry stone walls on their properties are en
couraged to attend a demonstration of wall repair on Saturday 18 June.\nA
‘gapping workshop’ will be conducted by the Dry Stone Walls Association of
 Australia\, and will be held\n2 – 4pm\, Saturday 18 June 2016\nPomborneit
North Hall\n(adjacent to the PomboMart at Pomborneit\, Princes Highway be
tween Colac and Camperdown).\nExperienced local waller\, Alistair Tune\, w
ill run the gapping workshop. It is free and anyone can come to participa
te or just watch. \nAlistair will provide hands-on advice to wall owners\,
and people who like to help them\, to gain the basic skills to maintain a
nd repair the gaps in their dry stone walls. \nLeaflets will be availabl
e for those attending\, containing tips on looking after dry stone walls.
\nPresident of the DSWAA\, Jim Holdsworth\, said ‘Dry stone walls are stro
ng and durable but\, like any man-made structure\, occasional maintenance
is critical to their longevity. Our aims are to encourage and help wall ow
ners to look after their dry stone walls.’\n‘The Stoney Rises are unique i
n Australia for the number of dry stone walls and the story they tell abou
t the volcanic geology of Western Victoria. The walls give the landscape
a special quality that must be preserved’. \nDry stone walls fall into di
srepair for various reasons. Stock\, trees\, kangaroos\, ground movement
and vandalism are just a few causes. If a wall remains unrepaired\, it co
ntinues to deteriorate\, potentially allowing stock to escape and a loss i
n the aesthetic and heritage value. Poorly maintained walls can also decr
ease the value of the land asset.\nThe Dry Stone Walls Association is keen
to support wall owners to recognize the first signs of wall deterioration
and develop the skills to carry out maintenance on their walls.\nBackgrou
nd\nThe skill of dry stone walling came to Australia in the mid 1800s\, mo
stly from Great Britain. The first settlers on the land recognised the opp
ortunity to use the stone that lay freely on the land across the landscape
of south-west Victoria. Many thousands of kilometres of walls were built
to define boundaries and contain stock. Most of the walls that were buil
t from that period through to the mid 1900s stand as a fine testament to t
he skills of the original wallers.\nMany of the very early dry stone walls
in Great Britain are in good condition today because wall owners allocate
time to inspect and repair their walls during autumn-winter when normal f
arming activity is lower. This maintains the functional effectiveness of
walls and ensures their retention as a valuable part of the community heri
tage of the area.

re\, occasional maintenance is critical to their longevity. Our aims are t
o encourage and help wall owners to look after their dry stone walls.’

\n
‘The Stoney Rises are unique in Australia for the number of dry stone
walls and the story they tell about the volcanic geology of Western Victo
ria. The walls give the landscape a special quality that must be preserve
d’.
\n
Dry stone walls fall into disrepair for various reasons. St
ock\, trees\, kangaroos\, ground movement and vandalism are just a few cau
ses. If a wall remains unrepaired\, it continues to deteriorate\, potenti
ally allowing stock to escape and a loss in the aesthetic and heritage val
ue. Poorly maintained walls can also decrease the value of the land asset
.
\n
The Dry Stone Walls Association is keen to support wall owners t
o recognize the first signs of wall deterioration and develop the skills t
o carry out maintenance on their walls.
\n
Background
\nThe skil
l of dry stone walling came to Australia in the mid 1800s\, mostly from Gr
eat Britain. The first settlers on the land recognised the opportunity to
use the stone that lay freely on the land across the landscape of south-we
st Victoria. Many thousands of kilometres of walls were built to define b
oundaries and contain stock. Most of the walls that were built from that
period through to the mid 1900s stand as a fine testament to the skills of
 the original wallers.
\n
Many of the very early dry stone walls in G
reat Britain are in good condition today because wall owners allocate time
to inspect and repair their walls during autumn-winter when normal farmin
g activity is lower. This maintains the functional effectiveness of walls
and ensures their retention as a valuable part of the community heritage
of the area.
\n
